11 Questions for... Amy & Kurt

We are Amy & Kurt aka Christina and Nico. I (Christina) am a graphic and web designer, Nico is a freelance photographer and image editor. After some time of exchanging creative ideas, motivating each other in our projects and having a lot of fun, we founded the label Amy&Kurt together in 2013. Here we can now throw all our ideas into a pot, stir vigorously and be surprised what comes out. We live, work and enjoy life in Berlin Friedrichshain.

02. What did you want to be when you were little and why?

Christina: As a child, I was always fascinated by my grandmother's large ornate oak cabinet and wanted to know who made such beautiful things. Yes, so I wanted to become a carpenter. But that would have been a nice profession, too, if I think about it...

Nico: Actually, I always wanted to become a professional soccer player. In the youth I played in various selection teams in which we were also regularly observed by DFB officials. At some point, however, other things interested me and then everything came completely differently.

03. What do you like about your work or what makes it special?

Christina: Since I also work as a graphic and web designer for an advertising agency and have a longer way to the office and fixed working hours, I love to start working for Amy&Kurt at home with my first cup of coffee in the morning in a very relaxed way. I can manage my time freely, I don't have any briefings that I have to implement, but can let my ideas run free - simply another side of my job. It's great to get positive feedback from customers who buy our products, that puts a big smile on my face...

Nico: The best thing about it is that you can implement your own ideas and fantasies without guidelines from "above" and let the customer decide whether he likes it or not. When customers send us emails saying that they love what they bought from us, it's really good and motivates them to keep doing what they're doing...

04. ...and what not at all?

Christina: Definitely accounting!

Nico: Since Christina takes care of the paperwork, I honestly can't think of anything... or yes: Lost mail makes me furious!

05. What is your most important work utensil?

Christina: The head and the computer. And I love the picture with the Pantone color chart on my desk. It's practical and so nicely systematically organized, and order is what I need sometimes when things get busy in my head.

Nico: My camera, my graphic tablet and my boxes on the computer - without music nothing works for me!

06. What is the most beautiful thing about your workplace?

Christina: That Nico sits next to me :)

07. where do you get your ideas, what inspires you?

Christina: Inspiration lurks everywhere... In our neighborhood, on trips, stories from people... Nico always experiences things that you just can't make up. We laugh a lot and don't take life so seriously. Then the ideas bubble up automatically.

Nico: I spend a lot of time in this Internet, there you take already sometimes the one or other inspiration.

08. What went really wrong in the last months?

Hm, actually everything is going great so far. Good luck...

09. What is your next goal? What projects do you have coming up?

Next is the relaunch of our website. The store needs new clothes!

10. You are a couple both privately and professionally. How does that work for you? Who wears the pants, how do you divide the work?

It works great. It was always our dream to do a project together, to spend more time together and to inspire each other. Now we have tackled it and it feels wonderful. Since we each have our specialties - Christina graphic design and web design and Nico photographic work and image editing - we complement each other perfectly. Other less creative tasks like accounting and parcel shipping for the online store are also clearly distributed. It's super nice to be able to enjoy small successes together - that's when the corks start popping.
