11 Questions for... The printing studio Mr. & Mrs. Rio

We are Mr & Mrs Rio - Laura Sirch & Sascha Wellm - the Munich risography studio. With our printing machine, which is similar to screen printing, we print ecologically with great colors on the finest paper. We not only print for clients, but also host fun and educational workshops, make our own beautiful stationery products and publish publications.

02. What did you want to be when you were little and why?

Big. But sometimes we would be happy to hang out on the playground all day again...

03. What do you like about your work or what makes it special?

That it is so varied! With every client comes a new personality, a new project with new challenges.
In addition, we can be completely creative in our own products - due to the fact that a lot is made here in the manufactory, the ratio between working on the computer and working with your hands is very balanced.

04. ...and what not at all?

That which we also mostly love sometimes annoys us a lot: Our machine, the Risograph, seems to have a life of its own and now and then we find it hard not to accuse it of malice... Our beloved material, paper, is also idiosyncratic and challenges us a lot from time to time - a real natural material, after all. But nevertheless we take great pleasure in mastering the challenges and are all the happier about a great result in the end.

05. What is your most important tool

?

Definitely our ruler!

06. What is the most beautiful thing about your workplace?

The view from our shop window into the beautiful Westend of Munich, our grid wall that keeps things tidy, and of course with its captivating inner beauty: our risograph.

07. Where do you get your ideas? What inspires you?

Mostly it's the things we would like to have or need ourselves - some of them make it into series, like our leather covers with notebooks and calendars.

08. What went really wrong in the last months?

There was a small accident where we produced a huge pile too much of a printed sheet when printing a publication. Luckily, there was only a yellow gradient on it - since then, we've had beautiful stationery with a yellow stripe!

09. What is your next goal? What projects do you have coming up?

We definitely have another Edition Rio coming up, which are publications curated by us in cooperation with other creatives and produced and published by us. The first edition was a beautiful collaboration with 39 designers, all of whom contributed an illustration on the theme of gold; that gave us a lot of pleasure, so we'd like to pick up where we left off.
