21 grams: New coffee hotspot in special interior
21 grams: New coffee hotspot in special interior
A café in an old cemetery equipment warehouse and former cemetery chapel? Logically, that can work well in Berlin, the three founders Jeremias, Daniel and Tillmann have thought and opened a few weeks ago the Café "21 grams" in Neukölln. We grabbed Daniel and asked him a few questions about the idea, the foundation and the interior.
The location: An old tool shed
Countless times we have walked past the location ourselves. A room last used for the cemetery as a tool shed, bordering directly on the cemetery. An inconspicuous building made of red bricks. Fortunately, this very one has now been brought to life by the three founders. When they got the keys for the former chapel, it still consisted of three single rooms and of course in a completely different "look & feel". The small building was completely gutted in order to design it according to the boys' taste. And that can be seen.

The transformation from the old shed to the 21 Gramm
Not only did the guys gut the old equipment shed, they also put a lot of hard work and sweat into the months-long remodel themselves, as we learned. For example, the salmon-colored columns are original colors that only came to light after a lot of work. The founders painstakingly removed three (!) layers of paint until they arrived at the current color. The salmon-colored columns, however, also have some scuffs that were caused by carrying materials in and out over time and were intentionally left unchanged. The lettering on the wall also happened to come out as we worked. What a stroke of luck. How old they are can only be guessed, but the saying above the kitchen passport fits quite well, so it just stayed on:
"What I do, you do not know now you will know it afterwards. Johannis 13.7"

If you take a closer look at the interior, you will also notice that the bar element or even the bench is always a bit away from the wall. The founders have chosen to deliberately separate the elements from the old space to create a second level in the room, a deliberate break between new and old.
But the rest of the café interior also has (s)a story to tell. For example, the stylish hanging lamps in the room Jeremias (who, by the way, is responsible for most of the interior) designed himself and then had them made. They are definitely eye-catchers and bring a great contrast to the interior. The table legs of the furniture on the terrace are not "off the shelf", but a metalworker friend has implemented them according to the wishes of the founders. All nice details that make the café a really special place - especially in Neukölln, a district that until now has not really been associated with this type of café.
