33-square-meter apartment by Fabian Freytag in Berlin

One space, many functions: For a design-savvy city dweller, architect and designer Fabian Freytag converted a 33-square-meter apartment in Berlin in such a way that the space is both optimally utilized and set off by intense colors.

From the outside, the house built in 1968 does not look spectacular. It is a functional building that used to house a senior residence. For the conversion of a one-bedroom apartment, the Studio 16, architect Fabian Freytag rethought the original layout of the one-bedroom apartment from scratch.

Light and color
The almost square room opens to the street with a wide window front. Opposite, a matte mirrored interior wall reflects the light and makes it appear discreetly larger. The eye-catching ceiling painting also contributes to this: With its yellow and white stripes, the pattern is reminiscent of an awning and advantageously sets off the low room height of just 2.80 meters. In general, Fabian Freytag showed courage when it comes to colors: The bulbous dining table Rosinda with its stand printed from fiberglass by the 3D printer is reminiscent of the eighties design of the Memphis Group. It is matched by the cantilever chair in Bauhaus red by Thonet and black vintage chairs. The Cecilia pendant lamp by Wera Jane picks up the striped theme of the ceiling.

Room within a room
Almost like a room of its own, the low pedestal in front of the window wall. The integrated shelf is open to the window and lets light in. Fabian Freytag had it made from white Fenix panels. An eye-catcher next to it is the armchair Veranda by Cassina, which reinforces the impression that this area is meant for relaxing. In the black-and-white bathroom, it is evident that Fabian Freytag has a knack for space-saving solutions. The Steel 19 washbasin from Alape, made of glazed steel, is designed for small apartments and is just 60 centimeters wide. Next to the basin recess and under it is storage space for bathroom utensils. A transparent shower screen for the floor-level shower and a large mirror make the bathroom look larger than it is. Despite the minimized space, Fabian Freytag cleverly interwove the different functions of the room. His solutions are not exclusively functional, however, but show pleasure in color combinations and good design.
